The City of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh is designated as Counter magnet city in the National Capital Region (NCR) plan - 1989. It is one of the counter magnet cities which are to play a role in reducing pressure on the growth of the Capital Region and the City of Delhi. The city of Gwalior with its size, distancing from Delhi and potential for growth is poised as a major economic player in the region.
This project deals with developing a landfill site for managing Municipal Solid Waste of the new proposed city of Gwalior West. The activities would include the complete process of Solid Waste Management, starting from designing of landfill site, door-to-door collection, transportation of MSW till treatment of the MSW and composting.
The broad objective of the assignment was to undertake a critical appraisal of the existing practice in Solid Waste Management and prepare Detailed Project Report (DPR) suggesting required improvement to fulfill the requirements, as also laid down in Municipal Solid Waste Management (Management and Handling) rules, 2000. The broad scope of work included:

A detailed technical analysis of SWM in 3 hill towns of Nanital, Shimla, & Shillong for generating an action plan together with comparative financial evaluation of the various options was carried out. The study highlighted the Institutional strengthening and Reforms requirements for better SWM in hilly regions and the action plan for Capacity Building.
Under this project the responsibilities included of an in-depth evaluation of funds earmarked for urban development sector in India covering municipal solid waste, sewerage and sanitation, etc. Findings of the study fed into CIDA's efforts towards formulation of action plan in this sector for India including Institutional Mechanism for identifying Thrust Areas and Evaluation of project proposals.
The project involves working out demonstration projects which could be replicated. The Scope also includes providing an organisational & Infrastructural set-up to replicate the learning from the demonstration projects as well as the Capacity Building of the Municipal Staff to further undertake similar activities.
Pilot Project in Dakshinpuri a slum area of New Delhi focusing on the Livelihoods of the Ragpickers involved in collection of MSW in the area and their formal integration in the system through capacity building & with the involvement of the community for attaining sustaining livelihoods were undertaken.  Under the project, the following activities were undertaken:
i.    Demographic Survey of study area:  Collection of primary data.
ii.    Status of Ragpickers & door to door collectors
iii.    Awareness Campaign among the community to make changes in their perspective towards the ragpickers and door to door waste collectors


The main feature of the project involves the Training & Capacity Building of Municipal Staff of select Cities in Uganda on MSW composting including CDM benefits.

The major scope of work included under this project:

            Audio/Visual Training Materials for the compost plant operators
            Water and Environment, and the Ministry of Local Government and the relevant compost
            plant staff.
           Finalization of Operator's Manual and  Preparation of Compost Marketing Strategy


A business plan covering the facilities, OPEX, CAPEX, Products, linkages & financial statements for ensuring sustainable management of E-Waste by the informal group, ensuring environmental compliance were prepared.
The aim of the project was to collect information about the technology used in manufacturing units from small and medium enterprises in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar and Jharkhand in select export oriented industry sectors and to prepare profiles of exportable technologies/ projects based on the survey, highlighting company profile as well as techno-commercial details of technology/project and to document them into a report to upload on the website of the said ministry.

Responsibilities included to assess the potential for export of IT & other consultancy services to 4 major Latin American Countries(Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Colombia), including field visits and discussions with India, IT & Consultancy companies operating in the region.

TOFT - a UK based organization is voluntarily doing Audits to the Hotels and holiday resorts located near the wilderness areas. Tourism as an Industry has played a significant role in destroying the natural environment and have added to the pressure of increased traffic bringing in noise and air pollution, contamination of water and loss of natural habitats. By conducting an audit to these hotels and resorts located nearby a message is sent and conveyed that 'Good Ecological practices make perfect economic sense'. The Accommodation Providers are encouraged to implement the good practices by taking care of Waste Management, water treatment, energy conservation and many other minute things which can reduce the evasion of ecological structure of the wilderness areas.

The Hotels and Resorts are invited to join this holistic initiative to protect the biodiversity and ecological structure of the wilderness areas and they are recognized by Rating and a Certificate after scrutiny

The main objective of the project:
o    To adopt and incorporate world-class state-of-the art technology and
      to use it for ensuring a world-class product.
o    To take advantage of the technological advances for improving the quality and
      enhancing shelf- life of fresh fruits and vegetables.
o    To provide meaningful employment to Indian youth, with adequate training to
      help them to harness the true potential of the land.
o    To enhance the availability period of the produce by controlling the factors responsible
      for deterioration
o    To develop in house technology combined with the world technology to extend flow of
      information and technology to other Indian farmers for pre-harvest management in the
      production areas for various perishable produce like fruits and vegetables.
